L House: Japanese-inspired sustainability

The L House is a Japanese-inspired family home in Culver City, LA. It combines both modern and traditional thinking, influenced by elements of zen. As opposed to some people who buy a starter house and then upgrade from there, this couple wanted to build their dream house and make it their lifelong home. A truly sustainable approach.

In terms of sustainability, the house is designed with a tankless water heater and recirculating pump for near-instant hot water, 26 solar panels and a foam cool roof, which reflects heat back to the sky rather than having it absorbed into the house, cutting cooling costs by up to 15%.

We haven’t even hit mid-July, but it’s not too soon to be thinking about fall fashion.

Top designers are really into red this year and with good reason. Bright red can be used with classic neutrals such as black, white, navy, grey, and tan to perk up your outfit. It is a classic color in its own right.

House in Hill was designed to directly connect to its surroundings by moulding its shape after the terrain. Cell Space Architects designed this modern house in Gunma, Japan as a response to the natural environment surrounding it. Following the topographic contours, the building features one storey above grade and one storey below grade. Defining the space by allowing the structure to borrow the shape of the hillside, the House in Hill exploits the natural inclination of the site to its advantage. The terrace wraps around trees and undulates to offer extensive panoramas of the surroundings.
