Jean Simmons, English actress who became an actress in Hamlet films has died in California.

80 year old Jean Simmons died after suffering a lung cancer. She died at her home in Santa Monica Friday night local time. This news came from her agent, Judy Page.(Los Angeles Times)

Jean Simmons who was born in London, England, began her acting career in England. Later on she moved to United States to participate in various musical films such as Guys and Dolls with Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, directed by Spartacus Stanley Kubrick, with Kirk Douglas, in 1960.

Simmons was ever nominated for Oscar for Best Supporting Actress category for her role as Ophelia in Hamlet in 1948. She also awarded as best actress nomination for her role in The Happy Ending, a film directed by her second husband, Richard Brooks in 1969.

Her marriage with Brooks ended in divorce in 1977. She is married to Brooks in 1960, several months after her divorce with Stewart Granger.

Until 1980s, she mainly appeared in TV mini series and won an Emmy for her role in The Thorn Birds in 1983. Jean Simmons also appeared in How to Make an American Quilt with stars Winona Ryder and Anne Bancroft in 1955.
